If The Rotters' Club was a coming-of-age novel of teenagers in England, The Closed Circle is a depressing look at the consequences of people's personalities and decisions by the time they are 40. What is funny about these characters in the first book is depressing in the second. Maybe that's the point. Evolve or die. Ben is stuck in the past. So is Claire.

I was amused by Ben Trotter's non-confrontation strategy to woo his school crush in the first book. But in retrospect, Ben's paralyzing inaction in high school is not so funny when we see these same tenancies in him as a grown man. We are who we were in high school. And we are also influenced by all those around us. Our parents, our friends and the world.
I hope this quick review didn't suck, because you should read these books.
