Disappointing sequel to The Rotter's Club, feels hurried and does that really annoying thing of shoehorning 'topical' events into the narrative without seriously attempting reflection, which merely makes it feel dated, very quickly. Does the earlier book a disservice.

I'm no Jonathan Coe Fan, in fact I didnt really get into his other books, however this little number kept me interested and highly amused. A quirky little tale that i found hard to put down... Recommended only if you like something off-beat.

Very easy and enjoyable to read. The author has the charcaters use various forms and writing styles throughout the book to advance their own stories which intertwine throughout the book. I enjoyed the unfolding of the connections between the characters lives and their personalities had meet wanting happiness for them.

Maybe this is better when read with its prequel -- the plot around a handful of Brits who grew up together in the 1970s and now meet up again around 2000 is somewhat haphazard, showing on the whole no truly likeable characters (that may be a plus) but also a slow plot that ends with some rather predictable outcomes (I thought).
If The Rotters' Club was a coming-of-age novel of teenagers in England, The Closed Circle is a depressing look at the consequences of people's personalities and decisions by the time they are 40. What is funny about these characters in the first book is depressing in the second. Maybe that's the point. Evolve or die. Ben is stuck in the past. So is Claire.
