I find it very strange that a lot of people cannot see the pure genius that is John Banville. This book is one of my favourite books of all time. Dark, poetic and masterful. I have not found anyone else who writes with such pure economic eloquence. Simply Brilliant.

It's like L'Etranger narrated by Humbert Humbert.

I'll preface this with the fact that I find John Banville difficult to read. But this books is full of depressing characters that you just can't develop any connection or empathy with. Too depressing to attempt.

A confident, disturbing narrative coupled with a clear evocation of Ireland that avoids parochial sentimentality.

A respected literary friend passed me this one, after I muttered over another of Banville's leads. He was right I didn't like this guy either. Great book. I thoroughly enjoy the everyday crapness of the people and situations.

The narrator is despicable, but the writing is enjoyable. Bleak, but it's Irish, so I suppose that's inevitable.

This character's name either means a lion (look at his mane), a meadow dweller, a sort of shelter, a physician, or just a color gray (but he's so much darker than that)--- and that which descends, like a certain river.
