K, the narrator is in love with Sumire, a girl he met in college. Sumire is in love with Miu, a married business woman. Got your attention yet? K soon gets a call from Miu about Sumire's disappearance during a trip to Greece and he makes the trip to help look for her. A slim volume, more novella than novel, the book explores some of the more familiar Murakami themes - loss, alienation, parallel existences - set against a backdrop of Greek island sunshine. The mystery of Sumire's disappearance helps keep the pages turning, and the ending is pleasingly amibiguous.

I must confess that this was my first Murakami, and I found it so amazingly onirical, a dream of isolation and angst in the beautiful flow of life and its joys. Overall a short novel that lesser writers would have turned into a cheesy romantic story or a gory tale of desperation, is a beautiful act of hope and love from the narrator to the main character.
