more I recently realised that this novel, more than anything else, is about people doing what they feel they must in a hugely antagonistic arena of conflicting beliefs of what is best for everyone as well as individuals. While terrible things are constantly being done, Vidal manages to show the motives behind the actions, which are primarily terror, and the desire to live, if for only one more day at worst, and altruistic views of how the world should run its course at best.
