When the US prized open Japan in the mid-1800s, America was as eager to learn about the its art and philosophy as Japan was to catch up with the West's technology. This book is provides a dazzling (and sometimes disorienting) litany of the ideas and people that fused East and West, creating much of the common ground that unites 'global' culture today.
