I like Jill Jones approach. The whole phase of AC, DC, the incandescent light bulb, fluorescent lighting, and the advent of electricity is fascinating. Overall, an easy, enjoyable read.

Magnificent account of the development of modern utilities and the expansion of electric power.Economic bubbles that were based on overextended expectations are nothing new, as this account shows, but in this story some people left profit to the side as they searched for greater utility (TESLA), while others are simply greedy egomaniacs (EDISON) or simple and successful businessmen...more

This book is an excellent accounting of how the effort to make electricity accessible wasn't a simple scientific pursuit: conflicting philosophies and motivations vied for dominance. Strong personalities, ingenious approaches, and quirky turns of fate all come out in great fashion here. Entertaining, thought-provoking, and, forgive me, enlightening.

Jonnes does an excellent job of evoking the time and the people while also giving a pretty good explanation of the science. I would like to understand more about why Tesla's AC induction motor was so revolutinary. I also felt like some of the financial aspects of the story could have...more
