Everyone covers or at least feels pressure to cover at sometime (think Billy Joel's "Stranger") This book lays out a vision of how discussions about race, gender, etc could be framed and developed in our world. We should all have the right to personality. An important book for the beginning of a real discussion about our differences.

The proper title is: Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights Whoever entered the title missed a colon which GROSSLY altered the meaning of the title. i was tentative at first, but yoshino's level of self-awareness and social criticism is remarkable. i found myself reading chapters at a time. it's not a gay asian-american civil rights manifesto. it's a quiet, thoughtful narrative about one person's experience andhow that mirrors american cultural attitudes.

Arguably one of the most important books I've read. "Covering The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights" by gay Japanese law professor Kenji Yoshino is part memoir, part scholary treatise, poetic at times, yet filled with scholarly debate, fact, and example. Yoshino expresses his term "Covering" using Gay/Lesbians, Asians, Women, Handicapped individuals, and other minorities...more
