This maddening tragedy is wonderfully illustrated by Persico. The lead up to the decision to make the final charge to death is told with such enthusiasm that the reader will feel as if they are in the trenches.

My favorite book from WWI. Great writing combining individual stories of the war. The focus was on the last day of the war before the armistice and how it was a microcosm of the whole futile war.
