In the genre of Harry Potter and twilight, but the interesting thing about the book is the introduction of new fiction characters apart from witches and vampires, it tries to create new creatures. The story build up for the climax and hold it till the readers are looking for more. The introduction of new characters and their interwined fates makes it a good read. And its not even that dragged and long where you wish that it could have been a little shorter. Its short and crisp, and worth the read.   hide

Nice set of three books. Read them in one go. Saw one movie also based on these books. (Golden compass)

Found them to be blatently leading the reader towards war with God, although I am not religious and love the freedom of writing I beleive we should be guided by imagination not strongarmed into the authors perspective. There is a reason it is called His dark materials trilogy, on top of that is was poor and inconsistent writing. If you are going to let your kids read them please read them first...more

A must read. It was so much more than a children's book - I don't even know if a child could understand all of it. I went from one book to the next and couldn't put it down. I thought it was interesting and exciting.

Love this trilogy. It is the modern version of Tolkein and Lewis. The last book is the best. Of course when I was reading the last book, some ignorant person commented that someone I knew liked the last book because of the fact that 2 characters who are male loved each other. (Sex is not part of it.) What I gleamed from this book was wisdom. Make heaven here on earth. Stop livign like doomsday is around the corner. Stop trying to get vengeance on others and never assume anything. You don't know if the next persons yard is truly green or not. Jealousy, envy regenge are petty things for animals and not real men. I digress. Love at times means sacrifice and letting go. If in a set of two, one is miserable, it is not love to hold on. Let go and let others be.   hide

Since most of North America has undoubtedly read this book before me, a short review: Quite the fascinating book. Well-paced, great imagery, compelling story. The only flaw is the obvious "Hey...I'm going to write another one that you'll have to buy."

This is a really bad, by which I mean silly waste of time, book. It is lacking even the most basic logic, or remotely convincing argument for its obvious argument. As an "atheistic" book it is an excellent argument for theistic religion. I mean really. You cant kill an angel by shooting it (OK I can accept that, though why an atheist includes angels in not clear) but you can...more
