more The 1st a solid adventure, not yet (very) controversial. Gets more and more so as the series progresses. Exciting, with tight, beautiful writing. I bow to Philip Pullman. As a fantasy writer as well, he is my model. Great world, great characters, great underlying messages, all built with tight handwriting. And I don't get the controversies. They are relatively mild, without Christian flaming, merely rejection of some views, of dogmatism in general, and builds upon the great Paradise Lost. And beneath it all is some values all can agree with, and a GREAT adventure story. You don't see atheist screaming about your condemnation of them. By the way, the ending is bittersweet and yet perfect.
