His Dark Materials Omnibus

An amazing trilogy that I literally couldn't put down. An intricate, well-developed plot the film never did justice to, intriguing concepts and fascinating characters. Good for adults and children alike, a book that plucked at my imagination and made me wish the world was really like that.

I really liked the first book, the characters really got me involved in the story even though there were lots of them. The second book was like a commercial for the third book abd the main character goes form being a strong rock of a personality to a pussy, and the third book was okay I likesd the diffrent worlds but I wasnt as happy with the ending.

Definitely a trilogy I will read again. Loved it.

I sped through the first two books - but stalled on the third. By then I was lost among all the worlds and characters and concepts. I don't see how this is a young adult book at all because I had a hard time understanding it! But I did enjoy the story - especially Lyra and Will. I missed them when the chapters turned to other characters.

I loved this trillogy the first time I read it. The second time I felt things kind of broke down at the end a little, but it was still pretty good. also, I don't hate god after reading this book. In fact I thought the God I believe in was portrayed clearly in this book, just not as the character "god" in the story. I also thought it was interesting that Pullman, a devout athiest, could let such a christian message slip in as the Christ type of Lyra enduring unbelievable pain and decending into the land of the dead to save the souls of everyone in the universe. I wonder if he did that intentionaly or what, because if that's how he destroys the faith of children, he better rethink his methods. well I really loved this series when i read it in middle school, but on a second read, I liked it up to the end where i just started thinking it was silly. It's been described as 'athiest propoganda' but I believe in God, and found that these books actually represented God (not "the authority") pretty much the way I think of Him.   hide

I'm on the fence with this book. It started out strong and then eventually became an interpretation of "Paradise Lost." The book is an easy read along the same vein as Rowling's books. The storyline is definitely controversial but it's not as if it's never been done before. I picked this book up because I watched the movie and was intrigued. I wanted to finish the whole series after that. In the end, I'm just glad I finished it. This book won't really leave any awesome impressions on me. I see this book as something to read to pass the time. There are better books out there.   hide

The plot thickens from one chapter to another, from one book to another. From the 1st book to the 2nd half of the 3rd book, the author placed emphasis on how adverse religious and political regimes can be. It was an excellent read, however, kids without a good foundation should stay away from this book until they are ready to confront attacks to their religious faith. From the 1st book to the 2nd half of the 3rd book, the author placed emphasis on how adverse religious and political regimes can be. It was an excellent read, however, kids without a good foundation should stay away from this book until they are ready to confront attacks to their religious faith. The concepts discussed here are deeply philosophical and against the beliefs of Christianity and other major religions. For one, the idea of going against "Authority" is completely unorthodox.   hide

A good book with some though provoking ideas. Like many readers out there, I found the first 2 novels superior to the 3rd which was a disappointment as you expect the series to end strong. By the time I was done reading, I didn't really care what happened -- not exactly how I wanted to feel. I did not feel the need to be beaten over the head with them as he did in the 3rd installment.Overall: A-   hide

Marketed for children and tha is fine since children don't need to be "written down to", this should be a must read for all adults as well.
