As always, Bryson approaches cities and people with a uniquely hilarious perspective. He seems to find the irony and humor in every situation, making you feel like you're traveling right along with him sharing the same inside jokes. I'm ready to hop on a plane and head to Europe now, using this book as a guide to where to and not to go! It was interesting to read from a perspective of the early...more

I laughed so much I cried from his perspective. Well written thoughts and ideas, he had very little people to talk to because each day was another city with another language. I like his realization about traveling at the end.

I can't even count how many times I laughed out loud while reading this book. I was getting strange looks from all the people around me. Bryson is very funny and very opinionated. I don't always agree with him, but I'm glad he puts it out there. Very refreshing is this age of political correctness. Plus he drinks too much. I really like the guy.

A quick read, I finished it while on vacation in Europe. It's funny, its dry, its witty, its sarcastic. Its just a great one to just pick up and read for the sake of reading.

My least favorite Bryson book. It has a much harder, edgier humor (bordering on sarcastic) than his other works. It seems that he really does not like the people he meets in a number of places. My least favorite Bryson book so far. Very ascerbic wit without his customary warmth to accompany it. Seems more like he's taking potshots at a variety of cultures than anything else.

This book was a fun read, which is enough for me to recommend it enthusiastically. I can see how some people might be annoyed by hearing about Bryson and Bryson alone for so many pages (Bryson himself confesses near the end of the book that he often wishes he could just "get up and walk out on himself" but as someone who's currently traveling around Europe alone, I appreciated his...more

Just finished this, my first Bill Bryson book - and it won't be my last. I loved travelling and seeing the world through another solo traveller, and feeling the ups and downs of just the normal things of travel: weather, injuries, getting lost, rude or indifferent services... And nicely combined with a lens that encouraged me to look at each encounter as part of the cultural experience of...more
