more If this proves to be Patrick Kenzie's swan song, an increasingly likely scenario as Lehane continues to mature from his storytelling roots (for better or worse, I'm not sure), then at least it's damn satisfying. The Kenzie/Gennaro novels are steeped in jaded, crime-noirish mystery, marinated in violence and injustice and blue-collar-Bahston mores. Unlike the previous four, however, Prayers for Rain is about vengeance. We know Kenzie quite well at this point, but we see him operate in an unfamiliar way, working off the clock in a sense. "Badass" doesn't even begin to describe the results. Sit back and enjoy the fireworks, unavoidably brief as they may be.
