more Stunning, absolutely stunning. Edgar Allan Poe, I think, is one author who consistently matches up with his reputation. Some of the tales are absolutely chilling; 'the Black Cat', 'Pit and Pendulum', 'the Tell Tale Heart', 'Berenice'...and then there's the mysteriously fascinating, 'the Gold Bug'. Wonderfully talented at appealing to the popular audience of his time, while still retaining an ingeniousness completely his own. 'The Raven' is an immediate favourite, so appealing on an educated but also in the mere rhythm of things. 'The Conqueror Worm' is also a favourite; and the poem 'Bells' makes me smile, somehow. I am furiously devout, and cannot express enough how much I value his work. A lot of it is dark, but then again, a lot of his life was dark. Not for people who thrive in happy endings, and sentiments of positive quality; some of his stories are downright frightening. But beautiful, utterly beautiful.
