This is about the three major religious traditions as a metaphor. This was the book that raised the ire of the Islamists and, I believe, got him stabbed in the neck for what the considered a harsh critique of God. Thing is, Mahfouz is so subtle that you have to THINK about the stories he tells before you can form a point of view. This is very obvious in Cairo Trilogy. Very subtle writer.

Heavy going, but an interesting read about how the different religions came about. Enjoyable.

Beautifully written, and Peter Theroux's translation is splendid. This novel is a retelling as myth of the history of the Abrahamic Religions. It wond the Novel Prize but angered the fanatics, and Mahfouz nearly died in an assasination attempt.

Interesting-but the end seems unresolved. Left a bad taste for such a nice story.
