It takes devastating emotional / physical violence in order for Ruth to come into her own light.

I really enjoyed this book. Off-kilter and interesting descriptions throughout, leading to unpredicted ending. I hate it when I can predict the ending.
I also read Map of the World by same author. Didn't like it as much. Could hardly believe she wrote both books, they were so different!

Wonderful- sad and poigniant, and with wonderful insight and wisdom
from the main character (Ruth) who shows that wisdom doesn't always
have to come with what the rest of the world sees as 'intelligence'- she
lives her life the best she can with what she has- she loves strongly and 
gives of herself when the rest of the world takes.
