more what a great book this is! all people everywhere should definitely read it! and also deschooling society by ivan illich. another great book by neil postman is 'amusing ourselves to death.' the main theme of 'teaching as a subversive activity' if i had to summarise it (and why not?, i am writing this review after all, so can make up the rules as i go along) is that the purpose of school should be to develop a built-in crap detector in students. it also elaborates on the types of crap that might be being detected by such a device if we had one. lots of stimulating asides on topics such as mcluhan's 'the medium is the message'. if i were me, i'd stop reading this review immediately and go and find the book!
