A really strange book with an increasingly dislikable protagonist. Metaphors and repeated images everywhere as you might expect from poet Dickey. East/West, Man/Nature... A sense of more going on than I could really figure out. Or maybe less, I'm not sure. Stayed with me, though.

Made you wonder what you would do in the same situation - would you kill to live? The writing is very 'compact' - no words are wasted but you can form a very clear picture.

For the most part it was gripping - but there were a few pages where the main character is dreaming and he just goes on and on and on about caribou heads and the blue color inside a glacier. But other than those sections it was great. Violent, but great.

Pretty darn good. Recommended by a friend who knew my love for Cormac McCarthy and his dark ways. By the author of Deliverance, so you know he has it in him. About a guy who gets shot down over Japan during a Tokyo bombing raid in WWII and then makes his way north to where he believes he will find what he is looking for. As much about what it is like to live in the back country of Alaska on...more

A novel about a young airman, fighting in WWII against the Japanese. He is shot down over Japan and this is the story of his journey across Japan. The aurthor is James Dickey, a poet. The novel, I believe, is in fact a prose poem, very tigh, very sensory told in the first person. A wonderful, powerful story.

Like "Deliverance" two decades before, poet James Dickey again pits man against all else, including himself and his limits, both physical and ethical. This tale is as much in the telling as in the told since it is a poet's homage to precise language used precisely. Once we are taken to the actual ice floes, and are given a visual of the interior of that glacial ice, it feels...more

I will not spoil this for you. Simply put, read this if you want a great journey inside and outside the mind and body of one of literature's more interesting main characters...

Determined survivalism as literature. Written in the first person, it tells the story of an American gunner who bails out of his spiralling bomber over Japan and slices and dices his way to the frigid islands in the North where he feels he has the best chance of survival. Along the way he tells us about growing up in the Alaskan cold and a few other things and it becomes evident that he's a...more

Shattering powerful--- dark, gritty, with a kind of Cormac McCarthy flavour. An American B-29 crewman shot down over Tokyo in March 1945 escapes north to avoid capture and beheading. He's Alaska-born, and grew up as a hunter and trapper--- so he has the skills to survive, and he's utterly, utterly ruthless and capable of McCarthy-level violence. No dialogue, really--- a book about being alone in...more
