more Tinti's straightforward prose is the focus of this novel. Apparently many consider this a strength according to the reviews. I think it is a serious weakness. I read the book and never connected with the characters. It wasn't until reflecting on the book after I finished that I realized how wild some of the characters and events were. With Tinti's writing style, you completely gloss over the giants, dwarfs, one-handed orphans, sinister doctors, murderous businessmen, raided graveyards, etc..., remaining emotionally detached from it all. At the very least, Ren is a character a reader should sympathize with, but Tinti just doesn't let it happen. I read the book, and didn't care.
