A good fun summer read. Set in the early Fifties, Flavia de Luce is a sleuth like no other. (11 years old, female, with a passion for chemistry and poisons).

I rather enjoyed this delightful murder mystery incorporating two of my favourite things - a bird (albeit dead) and postage stamps. The writing style is charming, with a goodly dose of somewhat cheeky humour and the characters are interesting. I would be most interesting in hearing some more of Flavia's adventures with chemistry. A fun read.

I really enjoyed this sweet little story about Flavia De Luce. It was written simply and without any vulgarity . Such a nice chnage from the usual books. I would highly recommend it to all and also to teenage readers who have read most of what is out there and want something new to read. It has murder , mystery and intrigue. Keeps you in suspense till the very end.

Flavia de Luce is one of the most original 11 year olds I have ever meet in a novel, and what a novel it is, mystery, science, and revenge with a few stamps thrown in. Set in England in the 50s it is just a very fun murder mystery with a very interesting little girl as it main protagonist. With a lot of humor and some sadness as well, the start of a good new series of books about an interesting,...more

If you're looking for something a little different this is it - a murder mystery narrated by a quirky eleven-year-old who just happens to be fascinated with poison.

A delightful new voice in British cozies. Set in 1950 England, Flavia De Luce is an 11-year-old unlike any you've ever enountered. Fiercely intelligent, expert on poisons, bent on tormenting her sisters, Flavia turns her mind to solving a murder mystery & saving her father. Great fun, although the end does have a dizzying wrap-up.

Fantastic. Well developed plot and dynamic characterization. Especially impressed by Bradley's ability, as an older male, to understand and lend richness and believability to his preadolescent heroine. Flavia joins the ranks of Anne of Green Gables and Jo March of Little Women as a precocious young woman with great strength of mind and character. Loved her and her passion for poison and intrigue!
