Friedman is a master reporter who shows his chops in this book, written nearly 20 years ago. He deftly details the complexity and difficulties that block an easy resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He also successfully captures the Middle East circa mid 1980s when Hassef al Assad still ruled Syria and Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally.

Short of going to the Middle East, this book is remarkable in its portrayal of the events of the Lebanon conflict, Israel-Palestinian relations. The setting is stark and the accounts realistic.

I hate Friedman more and more each year, and this is the book that started it. His arrogance and racism is truly irritating.

Interesting though somewhat outdated, a good study in the human condition and westernization. I wished he wrote more in depth about the Palestinian side of it, but he stuck with what he knew. Even 4 years in Beirut can't teach you about the Palestinians the way growing up Jewish teaches you about Jews.

Brings the middle east alive..Completely agree with what a reviewer said about this book..."From Beirut to Jerusalem is wonderfully shrewd, surprisingly funny and indispensable to anyone seeking a fuller understanding of the political causes and psychological effects of the seemingly endless strife which besets this embattled region."

If you're looking for a boots-on-the-ground analysis of the Arab-Israeli Conflict from a world-class writer, look no further. As resounding and resonating today as when it was first published.
