Across the Wire: Life and Hard Times on the Mexican Border

Read this book...and then go on a BorderLinks trip...but don't eat the cole slaw.

Sometimes hard to read, especially for people from the border.

An excruciating read made all the more poignant by Urrea's apparent love for the people whose stories he tells. It is difficult for me to think of this book as prose because his writing is so richly descriptive it reads like an extended poetic meditation-- Urrea captures the pain and downright despair of the circumstances he describes, but never sentimentalizes or pities his subjects.

I've read several books on the lives of Mexican immigrants and/or the US/Mexico border. This one is my favorite.

A must-read for teachers to understand the hardships of our students (and their families) who make their way up from Central America to the border.

I took Luis' class while reading this book and he's as amazing in person as he is on paper. This man has the ability to engage his readers like no one I've ever read before. Read it! You'll wish you did sooner.
