I HIGHLY recommend this book for every parent of girls and suggest you read it before they turn eight. Also, I suggest it for all school teachers, and volunteers that work with girls. TONS of food for thought!

This book presents the position of youth as "in danger" but I really don't see it to be that way. Sure, there's a few problems, but at least some of these "problems" could be just accepted instead of changed. Feminist perspectives have a tendency to confuse me.

I loved it not because the author didn't have huge unmistakable gaps in her comprehension and ability to appreciate the differences in experiences, but because those gaps were so expansive and telling. A lesson to academics in assuming they are aware of their own cultural limitations.

This book gave me a whole new perspective on gender's role in education and, as a result, society as a whole.

This book made me look at middle school from a girl's perspective in a new way and makes me glad (and feeling slightly guilty) of the so-called advantages my sons may have in the school years. Some of the boys profiled in the book were so obnoxious and evil, the teachers so eager to reward any behavior of the boys while ignoring the girls. Even though the book is dated, I remember from my...more
