more I found this book fascinating. Perhaps because I was born and grew up in Montana and could have felt a bit more personally connected with the setting. As this was my first exposure to history of the great plains wars (not counting what I learned in the 5th grade), I was quite intrigued by it. Ambrose does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life especially the 2 war leaders based in some instances only on stories heard 2nd and 3rd hand. Such a good job of describing these 2 great individuals, their surroundings, their background, their lives, and their dreams and desires that you can't help but root for both of them (even though you know only one will come out the victor when they face eachother). Like I said, I was fascinated by this book.
