I loved this book. I read it on holidays: it was brilliant - with lovely language, characters and plot twists. And short, too.

Unlikable characters and an unimpressive story.

This was a really quick read. And, honestly, the more I read of Ian McEwan the more I enjoy this book. I don't really know how to talk about it without giving a plot summary so I'll just leave you with this. It is certainly an interesting "modern-day morality tale" that leaves you with plenty of discussion ideas.

Could McEwan have written a more cliched ending? He was obviously hoping somebody would turn this book (which is beyond ridiculous in its portrayal of composers...should I save that woman from being raped? No way, I've got to write down this musical idea!) into a film. I am SO thankful they haven't and can only say I hope they won't.

First book I've read by McEwan. I wasn't fond of the ending, but I loved the concise prose that was used. The next one I plan to read by him is Enduring Love.

Look, this was one of those books that was excellent, really well written, great story. But compared to his others, a bit lackadaisical when it came to bringing it home. Then he won the Booker for it and suddenly people had all these elevated expectations, which it didn't live up to. McEwan deserved a Booker, he deserves many Bookers, but maybe not for this book.

Ian McEwan is an undisputedly great modern author. I'll continue to read his novels as few of his contemoraries manage to combine such beautiful prose & profound truths in such a deceptively simplistic style. HOWEVER~Despite winning the coveted Booker Prize, this is not his best work.

The plot summary listed on Facebook is terrible - if you go to Amazon, the one from Publishers' Weekly is at least a bit more accurate. That said, in tihs novel, as in the rest of McEwan's work, the writing itself is brilliant, but the mechanations of the plot are all too clear - at least in hindsight. I'd swear I read this one, but I recognize nothing of the plot. Therefore, I give...more
