David Grann deftly interweaves the tale of Percy Harrison Fawcett's obsessive quest for a lost city in the depths of the Amazon with his own nearly-as-obsessive efforts to properly document the gentleman's mysterious disappearance and follow in his ill-fated footsteps. The chapters largely alternate between the past and the present, with most of book focused on PHF's life...more

Thoroughly enjoyable- a great read for anyone interested in the life and times of Percy Fawcett, the Victorian explorer who disappeared in the Amazon in 1925 on his quest to find El Dorado.

Interesting story... think the most intriguing parts were recent evidence that points to the existence of a fairly advanced culture in the Amazon, prior to Europeans. Learned something new, which is always a plus.

I loved this book! It captured me from the first page and I was hooked the rest of the way through it. It's a non-fiction book that tells the story of a famous explorer, Fawcett, who made many trips through unmapped regions of the Amazon in the hopes of finding proof that a large civilation such as El Dorado, really did once exist there, and the current day reporter who followed in his...more

The throw away facts alone in this book could make a movie. It is really good. Highly recommend it.

This book was not exactly what I expected. I was hoping that it was more of a fictionalized history of Percy Fawcett. It is really more a historical review than anything else, but after I got over that, it actually turned out to be pretty good. It actually makes me want to run off and explore the Amazon, and while that is out of the question, this book was not a bad second.

Rich book detailing the life, times and balls of the last Victorian Explorer to the Amazon, Percy Fawcett in 1925. The mystery of what happened to him remains with as much conjecture as whether or not he found the "Lost City" itself. Good read..

Cannibals, flesh-eating maggots, torrential downpours, starvation, and mutiny. All in a days work for those who battle against the Amazonian rainforest. Grann seeks to resolve the disappearance of Col. Percy Fawcett, whose life’s mission was to discover an El Dorado-like civilization called the City of Z.

Very enjoyable book. Insightful on the Amazon from the perspective of non-native survival and also the effects of civilization which is discussed toward the end of the book. The main character, Fawcett, was a fascinating personality, who had far-reaching effects on so many people, despite how extreme the man was. The tradegy is that he and his wife, Nina, sacrificed too much to his...more
