Parini has chosen books that range from the time of the Pilgrims to feminist literature of the 1960's. He gives a summary of the books, which is nice since I hadn't read all of them and some I had read a long time ago. He explains how each book affected America and he also gives examples of similar books. While I didn't always agree with everything he said I did enjoy this. I think it gives the reader a good feel for philosophical, intellectual, and political movements in America.   hide
