This was really good! I never knew much about the background of Martin Luther King's ministry-the book provided information on his life and about the man who was obsessed with him. My daughter is now reading it.

This was a very good book...Of course you start the book knowing that Martin Luther King Jr is going to be shot and killed, but it comes as such a surprise when he does. It was also great to see the 1960 forensics used to catch James Earl Ray. My only disappointment is the rather sudden way the book ends. They catch him..he escapes from jail....they catch him again...oh by the way he dies in jail...more

I've read at least 4 accounts of MLK assassination and life now. This one focuses on James Earl Ray (Eric Galt, et al) Dr. King, and a handful of other central characters. It reads like a novel picking up with Ray's amazing escape from Jeff City prison, and MLK's move to address the garbage strike in Memphis. An amazing read.

This author makes history interesting and is factual without being dry. Very good book.

The details got to be a bit tedious, but it was interesting and I learned many things that I did not know before. I lost the shred of respect I had for Jessie Jackson (though I must say it was an EXTREMELY tiny shred).

I was too young to really know what was going on during this time in history. I learned a lot, but also the fact that history is once again repeating itself in so many ways. You just can't put a Hampton Sides book down. He does a great job once again & you feel like you are there.

Fascinating book about MLK, James Earl Ray, events leading up to the assassination, and Ray's arrest.

Hampton Sides' Hellhound on his Trail weaves together the stories of James Earl Ray and Martin Luther King, Jr., painting a picture of both men and tracking their movements in the period leading up to King's murder in 1968, and then detailing the massive manhunt that lead to Ray's capture. The idea for the book first entered the author's mind when he was a six-year-old boy in Memphis, the son of...more

Hampton Sides doesn't write bad books, and this is no exception. He presents an evenly detailed narrative that is takes a complicated story and creates a simple set of stories. James Earl Ray was complex, good at escaping, a loner, and wanted to be famous. This book shares information that shows that Ray acted alone and nearly got away. An international effort got him. I was intrigued by the...more
