Five million points to Sebastian Faulks!! It's so great when an author steps out of his comfort zone and steps into the shoes of a great empire of modern culture. Most writers cannotdo this without damaging the legacy of the empire but Sebastian Faulks has stepped into the smoking jacket of Ian Fleming and has not only brilliantly continued the legacy of the world's favourite spy, Bond, James Bond; he has done it creditably. The Devil May Care is classic 007 fare and all fans of teh suave english spy will be pleased by this work. I think even Ian Fleming would have been pleased with the success of this creation that holds true to the integral spirit of James Bond. The action, the girls, the espionage and the alcohol; it's all there as well as a host of characters brought back tot life from Fleming''s own books. I was euphoric at the brillance of this work, well done Mr. Faulks.   hide

This book reminded me of how Shatner began writing books about Kirk after Kirk was killed in Star Trek: Generations - I felt like Faulks just didn't like the reboot of the Bond franchise and wanted to go back to the more "honest" days of the Cold War. Having not read the Fleming books, I don't know if Faulks succeeds in picking up where Fleming left off. But I will say...more

Having not read the Fleming books, I don't know if Faulks succeeds in picking up where Fleming left off. But I will say that this left me conflicted about actually reading the Fleming books. Even putting aside any comparison to the Bond movies, as a spy thriller novel, it just wasn't that interesting. So if this is Fleming's style, maybe I don't want to read the original novels.   hide

If you're a fan of James Bond, this is definitely the book for you. Trademark Bond here, with all the gadgets and action that you would expect from anything Bond.

Very nicely written. Faulks does a good job of copying Ian Flemming's style of writing, as well as showing a complete knowledge of James Bond's history. Highly recommended to all fans of the 007 franchise!
