more The Gargoyle is quite a deep and meaningful book and after knowing that the author Andrew Davidson took 7 years to write it, you can admire such dedication and passion. The story revolves around the main character who spirals out of control and ends up completely burned and confined in the hospital burn unit with staff taking care of him. He reflects upon his toxic existence with the only recurring thought of ending his life in a most elaborate and guaranteed way once he is discharged. The excruciating pain makes death seem like it couldn’t come soon enough, until the arrival of a sacred presence named Marianne Engel who sculpts gargoyles. She resides temporarily in the psychiatric ward yet slowly becomes the only real thing that the man ever had in his life. According to her they had been lovers 700 years ago and she has been waiting for him ever since. His cynical and sarcastic nature challenges everything but through Marianne’s fantastic stories, reveals a much darker revelation to her world then even he was prepared for. My only issues, some of the text is difficult to fully comprehend because parts delve into historical and religious elements that not everyone clearly understands and some of those stories are so detailed that it becomes too much. Many unanswered questions remain even as the last pages paint a picture of closure, but it’s probably the way the author intended the novel to be.
