A stunning example of the free indirect discourse technique, using six characters no less, which must be much harder to pull off than Meyer makes it look. "American Rust" is clearly a serious work of fiction, with nearly every trope from the Western canon -- the fallen in paradise, the odyssey, sacrifice, redemption. And yet, this was a really depressing read. I can't recommend it without...more

Loved how this story was told from the perspective of so many different characters. And, contrary to comments about how depressing this book is, I found the nobility of the characters uplifting.

Heck of a good career start for Philipp Meyer, a Michener Fellow and now a Dobie Paisano Fellow too. This book his close to home as my hometown has suffered the closure of an industry and the resulting loss of jobs and loss of purpose left in the wake of capitalism's ugly side. very good read! most books lately seem so predictable so I really like this story of a depressed town, aimless young men and their angst... I never quite knew what was coming, and liked going along for the ride. sure it was kind of depressing, but hey that's life. two thumbs up!

A traumatic story of friendship, family, loyalty, and the human mind. Phillip Meyer has written a masterpiece with his debut novel. The story centers around individuals in a small Pennsylvania town that has been hit hard by the loss of the steel industry. Written in a style that is rarely seen these days. The novel reads like a Steinbeck novel. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone.

Buell, Pa., may not have been the proudest imaginary town never put on a map, but at least it was working steadily once upon a time. Then the steel mills closed, and in that death, so died the surrounding community. As in many of America's gutted towns, the very young and the old stay, but "all the smart ones leave." Lee and Isaac English are two of the smart ones. Lee went to college at Yale and...more
