Well...it's McEwan, so how bad could it be? It has his fluidity and his perfect command of language, but it's an odd book. There are no truly sympathetic characters, and it builds to a such a Felliniesque ending that I lost my ability to suspend disbelief.

I found the main character, a Nobel prize winner to be so feeble and uninteresting that I found it quite difficult to believe that he could have been married 5x, even if it was only for his status. He failed to impress me in any way and the plot remained weak and left me annoyed and unimpressed.

Dr. Beard is a sociopath, but in a nice way. It is nearly unbelievable how successful is Dr. Beard, both in his personal life and in his career. He uses wine, women and song. He uses his professional partners. In the end, it all falls apart. A good morality tale but it goes on a bit long. The pseudoscience and the bedroom scenes are entertaining.

On the outside a novel about climate change. But in reality about climate scientists - in this case an elderly theoretical physicist, who once received a nobel price and is now hopping on the climate change wagon. An interesting character study, but the narrative is sometimes a bit lengthy; and the end is not representing an interesting conclusion. I have published a more extensive review more

Although Ian McEwan is one of my very favorite writes, this one is a bit...slow. The Philadelphia Inquirer's reviewer hit it on the head: A Turgid Tale of Solar Energy and a Roly-Poly Romeo. Still, it IS worth reading--just not up to the level of many of his others.

Enjoyed this novel by one of my favorite british contempory authors. McEwan weaves a quirky tale of a man who gets caught up between his domestic life and his science world. Great character development, while also interesting information on the wish for world Solar power.

Not his best. Found it a little slow and not very interesting. It didn't hold me from the beginning.
