Rough sledding because of the writing (Keneally never met a sentence that couldn't be improved with several long parenthetical digressions), but an interesting account of the Irish-American-Australian connections in the 19th century. I wish I had a better knowledge of British and Irish history, since they might have helped me understand the book.

Fascinating... it took me a while to read, because it's quite dense and I wasn't sitting down to read large chunks at a time, which on retrospect I probably should have done. But it's a well researched book. I really liked how Keneally set the scene with the transportation of Hugh Larkin, and how his transportation differed so very little from that of the Young Irelanders and later the Fenians....more
