Interesting how California was built on speculation as compared to all the other states up to that time. At the very end, Brands mentions this is similar to the Silicon Valley boom of the late 1990s.

So, so cool! I really enjoyed this book. I love the way the author tied all the people together in this overview of the Gold Rush. IT sparked my interest in how this country has been settled and in some of the characters who did so. One of favorites being John and Jessie Fremont. YOu also learn about William Sherman, Sam Brannan, Sutter, Marshal, Carson, etc. I loved hearing about how people came...more
