more Interesting read. You can see the protagonist, Joey headed for a very different lifestyle. I felt like one of those bystanders at a horror flick going "No! Not behind the curtain! Don't go there!" while Joey blithely walks into a very different life than his previous one. Very likable character, and the story line has the odd, unexpected twists that Jane Smiley throws into her stories, bombs dropped in the middle of a prosaic passage that serve as hairpin turns for the story. Long book, and I could see Joey headed for trouble and there was of course, no way to warn him, which kept me shaking my head, wanting to protect this wonderful character.
I learned a bit about housing and the real estate business from reading it, which I wasn't expecting (although I still don't know what a "tuck point" is).
The ending was hardy, no punches pulled but yet, a warmth and a grace of sorts, where at least a few things work out like you hope they would. Good read and I would recommend, but prepare to be a little depressed.
