This book is mesmerizing. Egan here downright scary in her portent regarding terrorism, but also gets the US psyche dead-on.

This novel captures a lot of interesting concepts on image and exploitation, but it lacks a great deal when it comes to the characters and their open ends. The main character is a model who suffers through a car wreck and has to have her face reconstructed. No one recognizes her anymore. But she is completely unaware of her own looks before and after. I find that very hard to believe.

I'm not sure I quite understood this book - but it made for a compelling, if somewhat disquieting, read.

The model's story is the main event. The other story is Moose, who is driven crazy by his thesis regarding industrial development (see Nature's Metropolis) and his thesis how glass changed civilization. Metaphor as minotaur. metaphor as minatour. Anthony Halliday, Micheal West, Z, Charlotte, 80 titanium screws, Ordinary people, CGI, tropical fish.

One of the few books that I've read that still creeps into my thoughts years later. Amazing historical and cultural commentary.

Read 9/08. I have mixed feelings about this book. The story itself is lacking, but the author has such powerful insight into feeling not completely whole, and how individuals fill up that emptiness (or try too). Overall, it is a thumbs up. I give it a 6.
