This book is a collection of non-fiction from the author of Fight Club. It ranges from celebrity interviews to observations of cultural events like a combine demolition derby in Washington State to descriptions of his own use of steroids. Starts off boring and slow. Little stories of interesting people doing interesting things, eg, building castles, wrestlers, dog owners etc. Then it moves to a more personal view. Chuck semi-interviews celebrities, Marilyn Manson, Julitette Lewis. Then the best part of the book, about himself. i bought my copy while i was interning in london and it was called simply, "non fiction," but i almost bought it again at home in the us because i thought it was another compilation of palahniuk essays. regardless of how weird some of the topics are (the first one definately doesn't hold back), chuck's way of explaining the extraoridinary is something i one day hope to rival. exceptional read...more

Chuck's lead an interesting life to say the least, and his real world essays can often make for just as engrossing a read as his increasingly outlandish fiction. However, I said 'often' - the main problem with this is that some of the stories do ramble, and some are frankly not all that interesting. Good, brain-widening stuff it may be, but to be honest it could have been a little shorter and...more

Not bad. Some of these essays are fascinating––particularly the ones about men who build their own castles, the "Rocket Guy", and Chuck's own personal collection of stories––while many others tend to fall short of the book's title. Overall, I'd say about half the stories are variously interesting, while the other half are bland and unimpressive. Not his best, not his...more
