Gathering Blue is set in a world of savagery, neglect, abuse and a distinct class system. Hmm, sound familiar?  Gathering Blue is set in a world of savagery, neglect, abuse and a distinct class system. Hmm, sound familiar? Governing the populace through fear, The Council of Guardians manipulate the ignorant people, hoard knowledge, and attempt to control the future for their own selfish gain. Amidst the chauvinism, cruelty and strife we are delighted in the story of a benevolent and courageous girl who with her talents and strength has a desire to make the world a better place. This is the second book, after The Giver, in a loose trilogy by the very talented Lois Lowry.

This second book in Lowry's dystopia series (The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger) is my favorite.  Although not a sequel per se, this related book follows a very different society from Jonas' highly regulated comunity in The Giver.  This second book in Lowry's dystopia series (The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger) is my favorite.  Although not a sequel per se, this related book follows a very different society from Jonas' highly regulated comunity in The Giver.  Kira lives in a brutal place where the sick are left to fend for themselves.  Though she has a crippled leg, Kira also has a special talent for weaving that makes her valuable to the Elders who run the community.  But, of course, she eventually learns that the Elders are not as kind as she initially thought.  She determines to resist them in the way only she can...   hide

Cool story about three children with special gifts to make art and determine the future of their society. However, when the truth is revealed about how these gifts are being used to manipulate the masses, distort the truth, and keep people captive, they need to decide if they will subvert the system or go along with it. The decision is made toward the former for the book's main character Kira....more

However, when the truth is revealed about how these gifts are being used to manipulate the masses, distort the truth, and keep people captive, they need to decide if they will subvert the system or go along with it. The decision is made toward the former for the book's main character Kira. Awesome. Hard to believe it's just a young adult book.   hide

The book was good but I really didn't sucked in until the end. At the end I was so disappointed that it ended so abruptly but was happy to see that Messenger picks up where it left off!

It has taken me years to venture back into Lois Lowry's twisted future.  The world of Kira, despite its notable lack of technology, is in many ways frighteningly similar to the world of "The Giver"--people manipulated and chosen based on physical prowess. I understand how that might be necessary for a primitive-like society, but it is still heartbreaking. Fortunately,...more
 It has taken me years to venture back into Lois Lowry's twisted future.  The world of Kira, despite its notable lack of technology, is in many ways frighteningly similar to the world of "The Giver"--people manipulated and chosen based on physical prowess. I understand how that might be necessary for a primitive-like society, but it is still heartbreaking. Fortunately, Kira has a gift with needle and thread that means her salvation.  Lowry's writing is haunting--I must give her that--and I was spellbound the entire novel. I don't know if it has the same impact as "The Giver" but it certainly is a worthy story and companion book.   hide
