These books are good, but they still scare me! Somehow every horror movie I've ever watched is conjured up at the mention of "the 3 little girls in white" or "the lady in the green cloak." Silly, isn't it? :) I loved the witty exchanges between Simon and Gemma and Gemma and Kartik in this one. And I liked the tension brought out between Kartik and Gemma; that seemed fairly realistic, given their...more

Second book in the trilogy. Creative Victorian fantasy novel. Little bit dark but a very enjoyable read for older YA readers.

If you have not read A Great and Terrible Beauty, go do it right now! Rebel Angels is the sequel, and you have to read them in order. That said, this book was incredible. The writing is impeccable. It really captures the Victorian sensibility, while providing an exciting supernatural adventure and mystery tale that will keep you guessing until the very end. And if you read it for no other...more

Libba Bray's writing style not only employs amazingly intelligent and genuinely entertaining sarcasm, but has a way of writing...more

This book is the second book involving Gemma Doyle. I don't really know how to describe or review it because sometimes I thought that the book was hard to follow or understand. One more book to read in the series and then maybe I'll have a better idea of how to review it. I think maybe it is also due to the fact that there is some fantasy elements that are in the book that throw me off.

Slow start but I do like how the author set up with the first book. It was not just a reveiw of what happened she did it while setting the stage for this book. Once is got going it was unstoppable.

In this second book of three, Gemma Doyle's simultaneous struggle against both Evil and Victorian social mores continues to entertain me. Gemma stars in a classic ghost/magical realms story at the same time that she embodies a generation of young women who began to turn away from social strictures that denied women the simple power of making their own choices. I look forward to reading the...more
