Fallen

This didn't live up to all the hype. It kept reminding me of Twilight. There is even a chapter with the same name, Open Book. I was also annoyed that nothing really happened between the main characters until you get passed the first 200 hundred pages. The only thing I really liked about it was the cover. I'm not in any rush to read the next one in the series.

Also, I had no connection to Daniel because he seemed boring too. Not only are these things a hinderence to the story, but so are the plot holes left as well. For instance, why does Trever get burned to death? What's the importance of the shadows besides that they gosip? Why does Luce keep dying? Why are both Luce and Daniel damned? Ext ext ext!!! The list goes on. I don't consider this a terrible book just because it was mediocre , but because it had alot of potential. Hopefully the next one, Torment, will be much better.   hide

"Torment! Torment! Torment! Torment By Lauren Kate, where are you? Oh why does thee have to be so far away? Thy cannot bear to live without you!!!" Screams The Monster Of Books. You know you like a book when your itching for it's sequel. Sadly, and it's understandable, that's far away. September far away!! Just so everyone's clear. While everyone is excited for it to be there senior year (next year is my senior year in high school) I'll be wrapped up in Luce's & Daniel's story. Anyways, you also know when you like a book when your still daydreaming about it 2 weeks after you read it. And I'm not saying that this book took 2 weeks to read, this took 1 day to read, but it's still in my head. Anyhow onto the review, what to say. I've heard mix reviews about this book, so I was scared at first but the prologue immediately caught my attention and spun me into a addiction that lasted from beginning to end, to even now. The book has everything a reader wants. Such as perfect imagery, realistic character with life-like dialogue and two hot guys that any girls can drool over. Lauren Kate spins a tale like never before and her writing and story telling will have you memorized from the very first few pages. She does something that I really like in YA fiction but it seems very difficult to do as I've only seen few authors who have really shown it, and that is emotion. You have heard me in previous reviews bragging about the author not showing enough emotion and you may wonder why I think it's a big deal. I think it's important because you get more feel of the story, it's more life-like, and you can relate to it a lot more *even if it's supernatural romance*. Lauren has grasped the emotion almost perfectly, there's one part that wasn't right but read on and you'll find out what that is later. She sets her setting in Savannah, Georgia in a reform boarding school. Luce feels alone and when you read it you feel the place (Sword & Cross Boarding School) is creepy and dead. What Luce is feeling in the book, you feel. What she sees, you see. It was just a amazing experience, and I consider this book one of 2009 best books. What I didn't like in Fallen was in the beginning, the author eventually stops doing this, but she switches from first person to the author narrating her. Example of this is; "Which is why she was enrolling in her senior year at Sword & Cross a full month after the academic year had begun. Being a new student was bad enough, and Luce had been really nervous about having to jump into classes where everyone else was already settled." (Page.11) Do you see see she switches from first person point of view, to either the author talking about the character or talking about herself in third person. That was kind of annoying and eventually it went away, I think I agree with someone else (can't remember which book blogger) but the author was settling in and getting into Luce's mind. Another thing that bothered me was the part that lack emotion was the shadows and how Luce handled them. It just didn't seem realistic and it was hard to take her seriously at times. The third thing I didn't like was that Luce would explain something that already happen but there would never be a chapter or page on it. Like she would explain past events that had happen, but were never in the book. I would of like to see those things happen instead of being explained, I think it gives it a better affect, especially when we're talking about dreams. The characters all had motives, and were quirky and unique in there on way. I loved Penn & Arriane. Of course the romantic interest were Cam & Daniel, who were both gorgeous and sexy :) Making one reader happy as hell, but I was sad that the guy I always want to go with the girl is never picked. I was confused at the end with Cam (Epilogue). Which means I must read Torment (the sequel) as soon as it comes out. Somethings in the book were obvious, but others were very surprising and I didn't seem coming. Daniel acted as a jerk at first, and as a reader you were really annoyed with him and wanted him to be nice, whereas Cam was sweet and just amazing. I recommend this to anyone, I loved it so much and so will you. It is fast paste and I didn't find one chapter boring which is unusual for me. Well that's all I'm going to say for now, now it's your turn to read/read & review it and tell your opinions. I love to hear what you think, I like seeing new POV from others.   hide

By lunchtime, she runs into the bathroom crying, her hair and shirt covered in that day's meal. But soon she finds a few friends and begins to settle in. However, she is far from being able to rest easily. The "shadows" that have haunted her for the majority of her life seem to be making appearances more and more often, and she doesn't know why. They've gotten bolder, and now instead of simply skirting around and following her, they occasionally surround her, even touching her. One day, when the shadows come, Daniel, a fellow student, walks into the room, and they quickly move away. There is something hauntingly familiar about Daniel Grigori, but Luce can't figure out what it is. He appears in her dreams, dreams so vivid they feel real, as if they were something she had actually experienced. She wants to talk to him, figure out exactly why he can make the shadows go away, why it feels like she knows him, but he keeps her at a far distance. Things get progressively more dangerous as the days wear on. Luce feel an inexplicable draw to Daniel and won't stop trying to find out more about him and his past. If only she knew the truth about herself and him. The truth that she and Daniel can never, ever be together. FALLEN is an incredibly intriguing book, fraught with delicious suspense. The mystery seems to never abate, instead growing with each and every chapter. I felt like I might explode from the tension. I found myself rushing to get to the ending, while simultaneously enjoying the journey towards it. TORMENT, the next book in the FALLEN series, cannot get here soon enough.   hide

Okay for some reason this books gonna be compared alot to other books, but I sort of have to do this to get my point acrossed. I have read Evermore, and I absolutely hated it. It was very crappy simple-minded writing. This storyline is VERY similar to Evermore, but notched up about 100X better writing and characters and description and all around better book. I know some people that found this book pretty slow, and they didn't like it as much as I did. But it had been a long time since I had gotten captured by a book. I've heard a lot of mention of the similarities between this and Hush Hush and I haven't read Hush Hush yet, but I have it and i plan to. But the deal is, this was my first Angel book, so its very neat. I love the writing SO much, thats what kept me hooked, the writing style was similar to Stephenie Meyer except it wasn't quite written in first person like Twilight was, but the progression and flow of the story and writing was very similar. The storylines of Twilight and Fallen are not similar, just so you know. The story was so interesting and intriguing to me, and I really got to know the characters pretty well. The romance in the story was all so amazing and sweet, and Daniel almost had me feeling like I did with Edward. In the beginning I was rooting for another character, and I was hating Daniel, but once everything falls into place, Daniel gives in to how he really feels, and he's not afraid to really be in love with Luce, he's amazing, and protective and in the end I found him fascinating, like Edward almost. I really want to know what Lauren Kate has in store for us in the next book. I can't wait.   hide

Only downfall I felt was Luce's continual attraction to Daniel that made it close to abusive, (i wish she would stand up for herself more) and Daniel didn't have too much going for him besides hot and gorgeous, though he didn't show more personality traits that edward cullen, so kudos for him. Plot: well done, fast paced, slightly predictable at some points but there were a lot of hints so i'm willing to let that slide. Negative points for the ending, it was a little too quickly done and set itself a little too nicely up for a sequel that irked me just a little. The climactic explanation was a little cheesy as well and it didn't really go well with me. Writing: good and addictive, I really wanted to keep reading this and had to know what was going to happen, so that's a big plus in my department. 4/5 I probably won't buy this or the sequel but I will look into the rest of the series and take it into consideration.   hide
