Not your typical story of a bunch of friends and their daily lives. It follows a bunch of people who are all, save one, a bunch of low lives as they go about their way looking for the next hit and the next big thing. Porno is its sequel.

Absolutely marvelous. The way he uses accents to make his characters communicate is fascinating. Beautifully sketched characters and I liked the way he did away with any "hero" in the book. Even 'Rent boy' was as muddled a character as Spud.Intelligent and dark humor that makes you ponder but not till you've grinned for a while. Great book from beginning to end. Welsh is the 'Mother Superior' :D.

Récits sordides, dialogues cyniques d'une jeunesse écossaise sans avenir et misérable dans l'angleterre des années 80.

Greatest fucking book of all time, I agree with the Rebel, inc statement that says, "Greatest book written by a man or woman, deseveres to sell more copies then the bible." Welsh does a wonderful job of exploring the lack of scottish national idenity and beats the concept of unionism to a bloodly pit with this novel. Plus it's extreme witty and dark, touching on many issues that shocked...more

I admit, it was hard to read, and some parts I had trouble understanding. But this has to be one of the best books I've read so far. I've never been so involved in a group of characters in my life. In the end I felt like they were all people I knew, which is super cliche but is hard to avoid with Trainspotting. Everyone is so well developed and I found myself missing the character Rent...more

A bunch of stories told with style. Insight into a nihilistic world that will leave you astonished by its crudeness. Very human.

I saw the movie first-it sparked my interest in picking up the book. To be honest, id have a hard time getting used to reading the book if i hadnt seen the film first (since its written primarily in scottish dialect). As it always seems to go with movie adaptations, the book was better-much better. The book had parts i dont understand why the film didnt include. The best chapter of the book is...more

i give this five stars because although the Scottish dialect is hard to understand its great. its modern, quirky and at times disgusting. it deals with drug addiction and the characters are portryed excellently throughout. i get the sense that it was written for scottish people (no shit, huh?) but that doesnt mean it can't be read and enjoyed by readers of modern fiction.

It took me so long to figure out who was talking since they are mostly high in this book. Here's the thing - Welsh knows what he's doing - so my advice is to read this out loud until you hear the nuances which distinguishes one character from another. It's worth it. This is an unsympathetic view of very flawed characters - and yet you will root for them - well some of them. Kudos to Boyle and...more
