An impossibly great book. My favorite story of all time.

Couldn't get into this book, and the best thing about the movie was Dustin Hoffman.

As someone who has bad sinuses, and therefore smells even less than your average human, delving into a world dominated so fully by scent was a little bizarre for me. I don't think I've ever seen the word "odor" used so many times in such a short span... That said, I thought this book was a fantastic read. It is paced sort of oddly, with that long stretch in the middle where nothing really happens, and his quest for that ultimate scent doesn't truly begin until about the last third of the book, but I still found it compelling. I think its definitely worth a read, even if for no other reason than to experience a way of describing things that most authors touch on only briefly, if at all.   hide

The premise is tantalizing, seductive, but the characters and plot sometimes fall by the wayside. I think this is one of those rare books that you can equally love reading and hate reading at the same time. The premise is tantalizing, seductive, but the characters and plot sometimes fall by the wayside. I read it for that reason, and honestly, I was quite swept away by Suskind's descriptions in the novel. He does have quite an eloquent tongue/pen. The best novel ever. it's not a usual story. The author has discovered a new hero !!

Enjoyable, but sometimes let down by the peculiar writing style and narration (which very well may be fault of the translator). I don't think this often: but this book could have been longer. It seemed to skirt around important events too often for my liking. All complaints aside it was hard to put down and a very unique tale. Now to see the movie...
