Of course, a lot of why the film was a convoluted mess had to do with the censors cutting out key plot points. The plot is still somewhat convoluted, but does reach a point of being totally clear, unlike the 1940s film. The characters, however are the best part, aside from Chandler's mastery of similies and metaphors. This is the kind of noir Frank Miller aspires to, but never reaches.
