The Cat in the Hat

As a parent, this book taught me an important lesson: you should never leave your small children (or teenagers for that matter) alone at home without supervision because they're likely to let in any strange character wearing a funny hat that knocks at the door. And after that, you house is likely to be turned upside down!

This was very clearly remembered by me to be the first book that I ever read. I also very clearly remember how much I disliked the main character in the book. I remember thinking how the cat was such a messy, inconsiderate, selfish character who didn't listen nor care about the feelings of the people whom he claimed to want to have fun with, and was friends with two of the most destructive, disruptive and subversive kids in the world, Thing 1 and Thing 2. It's a wonder that I continued reading at all.    hide

This was in the recently added and brought back great memories. Not my favourite of Dr. Seuss but one of the earliest books I read and one i read to my children. Fabulous to read to kids as you can really get into the read with gusto.

I hated this book when I read it as a child. The "cat" is an insult to cats everywhere. He doesn't even look like a cat. Sorry, I just really never liked this or any Dr. Seuss book
