"The Shadow in the North" totally exceeds my expectations! What a powerful story with subtle language and sophisticated storyline. I dare say that it is even more captivating than its prequel "The Ruby in the Smoke". It seems that "The Ruby in the Smoke" sells me more at the moment.

Similar to the preceding book The Ruby in the Smoke in that it's an engaging, easy to read story. Better in that it has a philosophical moment. Worse in that a good guy deliberately kills a bad guy, which bothers me morally. In the previous book, the killing done by good guys was a little more forgivable because it was more self defense.

Second in the Sally Lockhart series. These are not usually the types of books that I read, but I loved the other Philip Pullman series and found this a quick and engaging read. This was where the issues of political and social injustice start to appear, along with the questionable ethics of lending one's craft to an evil purpose.
