While one or two stories around key characters are interesting, it fails to draw those readers who are not interested or familiar with the military operation. Even the ending fails to bring about surprise that would thrill the readers, with a predictable outcome to a conflict of super powers under the old cold war setting.   hide

To me, this is THE defining piece of military fiction. Reading this book forever raised my expectations of what a novel can accomplish. From the highly accurate technical detail to the myriad of units and characters to the mixed unit tactics, acts of heroism, and nail-biting moments of tension, everything this novel attempted, it accomplished. To me, this is THE defining piece of military fiction. Reading this book forever raised my expectations of what a novel can accomplish. From the highly accurate technical detail to the myriad of units and characters to the mixed unit tactics, acts of heroism, and nail-biting moments of tension, everything this novel attempted, it accomplished. If you are a Clancy fan or have any interest in military fiction, you owe it to yourself to read this book. The only downside is that you may never enjoy another mil-fic book as much again.   hide

Not as suspenseful as Hunt for Red October, but a good read nonetheless.
