These mysteries are set in Alaska, with an uber-independent Aleut woman living the subsistence lifestyle in a (very) isolated part of Alaska.  I loved the combination of kick-ass character,interesting plot and a chance to learn about a very different way of life. 
There's a whole series of these books, but I'll just list the first here.

One of the first in the series -  I discovered this writer in Alaska and have kept on reading her

I've read several in this series but not the first one.  It's a good mystery but the best part is the glimpse of the culture and life of the native Alaskans.  Easy and quick to read.
