This explains a lot of background but is not the intense thriller the rest of the series is. I went back and read it half-way through the Jack Ryan series and was happy I did, but I would not recommend it as a stand-alone title or as the first one you read.

When i saw the book, i thought it was just another military oriented drama, but as i read it, man it turned out a whole lot better. The author clearly understands human emotions and presents it ingeniously. The military plots are good too and the way the protagonist sails through the book is just incredible. Its realy worth a read.
