Reading this book before 9/11 would give the reader an totally different experience than those who have read it following 9/11. It's scary to think this book was written in 1994. The first thing I thought about on 9/11 was this book. Now to get on with the review, the book is definitely worth reading. One of the last good Clancy books.

The first novel in the Jack Ryan series written to reflect the collapse of the Soviet Union. There are some discontinuities with the rest of the series that are not explained away, like how Captain Mancuso from The Hunt for Red October wound up as a sub commander in the Pacific, but they don't detract from the overall storyline, which is entertaining [if a little farfetched]. How could war work between present day Japan and the US? If you want to know, its in here. I was surprised by how well the plot fit together. I knew the other Jack Ryan books were good, and this is excellent. The ending is a real shocker...
