The narrative style was not very gripping, although the content was good. It was a good book to get a personal view of the Civil War and how it affected families. Did not like the way the author used literal spelling for the uneducated vernacular of the Creightons. My kids seemed to enjoy it.
This is on the 8th grade approved reading list in Florida. That doesn't mean it isn't worthy of adult reading. It follows a boy whose brothers have all gone off to fight in the Civil War, and his coming of age.
Duuuude! I LOVED this book! We had it for literature class, and it kinda had a bad reputation for being a "boring" book from other people I knew, but I read it and ended up really loving it!...a lot! :D
