Practical Magic

Well written, but I just didn't like the style or tone of the writing. I don't know what to call except maybe "dirty realism."

I saw the movie first and wanted to read it. Very well done. You can feel the magic in the air, the emotions of 3 generations of women just jump from the page.

What can you not say about this book, it is fabulous! If you seen the movie you have to read the book!

I love Alice Hoffman's ability to make the everyday magical (okay, she's more literal about it in this book). I love her language and her descriptions, it makes me want to read her words out loud so I can appreciate them fully. I love Alice Hoffman's ability to make the everyday magical (okay, she's more literal about it in this book). I love her language and her descriptions, it makes me want to read her words out loud so I can appreciate them fully. This book is a great starting point for those who have never read Hoffman before - ignore the terrible movie version and indulge in this modern day fairy tale instead. All of Alice Hoffman's books are like modern day Grimm's Fairy Tales and this one, about a family of witches who are destined to never find love because of a curse is a beautiful and empowering story.   hide

top 10 of most favorite EVER!

Not Hoffman's best, by any means, but definitely well-written. She writes with her own brand of magic that beguiles in a different way every time you open one of her books. I really loved all of the superstitions that were strung throughout the book so that they shape the world of the Owenses and make it more vivid and vibrant.

Hated the movie, loved the book! I got sucked in to the characters and story. I don't like all the Hoffman stuff, but this one was great.
